Biography

by. Fr. Michael Reardon

Fr. Patrick O’ Dwyer 1947 – 2009

Fr. Patrick was born on 21 October 1947 in the townsland of Rearcross, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. On the completion of Secondary School (High School) Fr. Pat entered St. Patrick’s College, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, to complete his studies for the Priesthood. He was ordained to the Order of Priesthood on June 10, 1972 for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Arriving in Los Angeles on August 12, 1972, Fr. Pat took up his first assignment at St. Anthony’s Church, Oxnard. After four years there he was transferred to St. Timothy’s in West Los Angeles. In 1985 he was appointed as Associate Pastor at St. Bruno’s Catholic Church, Whittier. Fr. Pat served the community of St. Bruno’s for the next 20 years, becoming Administrator of the Parish in 1990. In 1993, upon the retirement of Fr. John E. Cooley, Fr. Pat was appointed as the new pastor.

During his time here at the parish, Fr. Pat cared well for the needs of the people, paying special attention to the sick and elderly. He was responsible for the building of the beautiful Parish Center (offices and meeting rooms) which opened on January 12, 1997, following a special Mass of Dedication. He also undertook the renovation of the church, enhancing the space for worship. The renovation of the church was completed in time for the Easter celebration of 2000.

Fr. Pat was assigned as Pastor to St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, Westlake Village on July 1, 2005. On Tuesday morning, July 14th, news came to us of his untimely death at the age of 61. He died on Monday evening, July 13, 2009. Fr. Pat was a good priest. He served his God and people well. He is survived by his brother, Tom and relatives in Ireland. Our prayers and sympathy go out to them.
